Why should a small business website be hand coded instead of WordPress?

WordPress runs a large share of the web, but for a five page small business site it brings plugins, updates, security patches and weight you do not need. Here is what hand coding changes for speed, security, cost and ownership.

What hand coded means

A hand coded site is a set of files, HTML, CSS and a little JavaScript, written for one business and served as they are. There is no content management system sitting between the visitor and the page, no database query on every load, no theme and no plugin layer. When someone opens the page, the server sends the file and the phone draws it. WordPress works differently: every page is assembled on the fly from a database, through a theme, with each active plugin adding its own code. That is useful for a news site publishing fifty articles a day. For a plumber with six pages that change twice a year, it is machinery with nothing to do.

Speed on a phone

Most of your customers will open your site on a phone, often on a building site or in a car park with one bar of signal. A hand coded page can be tens of kilobytes. A page builder page carries the builder's whole toolkit whether the page uses it or not. In our August 2026 survey of 185 Sydney small business sites, the median homepage sent 209KB of raw HTML before any image, font or script, and one sent 4.3MB. Some of the sites we build load no web fonts at all, because the system font is already on the phone and costs nothing.

Security and updates

WordPress sites get broken into through plugins and themes that have not been updated, and the only defence is to keep updating them, which is why so many agencies sell a monthly maintenance plan that is mostly pressing update and hoping nothing breaks. A hand coded site has no plugins to update and no admin login to guess. The attack surface is a folder of files behind an SSL certificate. There is still work to do, hosting, backups, uptime monitoring and a weekly health check, which is what a care plan covers, but it is looking after the site, not patching holes in someone else's software.

The real cost of plugins

A WordPress site rarely stays free. The theme is a licence, the form plugin is a subscription, the booking plugin is another, the backup plugin another, the speed plugin trying to undo the weight of the others another again. Each one renews, each one can conflict with the next after an update, and each one belongs to a company that can change its price. On a hand coded site the booking calendar is part of the page, the form posts to your inbox, and the features are built once. Our add ons are a single price: a booking calendar $150, a gallery $100, Google reviews $100, a map $50, with tap to call, WhatsApp and email links free on every site.

Ownership

A site built on a page builder platform often cannot leave it. A WordPress site can move hosts, but it drags its plugins, theme licences and database with it, and the next developer may want to start again. A hand coded site is files. They can be copied to any host in the world and they will work the same. We register the domain in the client's name from day one, hand over the files at go live on a quoted build or after the twelfth payment on a monthly plan, and the site keeps working with no licence to renew. Owning your site should mean being able to take it with you, not having a login.

Accessibility and being found

Hand coding also means every heading, link and image is placed on purpose. That matters for accessibility, where a screen reader needs one main heading and sensible alt text, and for search, where Google and AI tools read the structure of the page. In our survey, 28 Sydney sites had no main heading, 37 had more than one and one had fourteen; 68 percent failed the check for being readable by AI tools. Those are the kinds of things a template produces by accident and a hand coded page gets right by default. We check speed and accessibility on every page and write a WCAG 2.2 AA report on the Growth and Ahead plans.

When WordPress is the right choice

There are cases for it. A publication posting daily, a large catalogue with hundreds of products, or a business with an in house marketing team that wants to add pages itself every week will get more from a content management system than from a studio making edits. For a small business whose site changes a few times a year, the maths runs the other way: hand coding costs less to run, loads faster, breaks less and is easier to own. Edits are not a problem either; on a care plan a text or price change is turned around in one to three business days, which is faster than most owners manage to log into their own admin.

Questions

Questions

Can I still edit a hand coded site myself?

Not through an admin panel. Small edits to text, photos, hours, prices or testimonials are covered on a care plan, from three a month on Essentials to eight on Growing with a one business day turnaround.

Is a hand coded site more expensive to build?

Not with us. A home and contact page is $450, a site you own, and there are no plugin or theme licences to renew afterwards.

What about bookings and forms?

Built into the page. The enquiry form posts to your inbox, the availability calendar runs on the site with no third party widget and no monthly fee, and a booking calendar is a $150 add on.
