What does an AI receptionist do for a tradie or a clinic, and when is it worth it?
An AI receptionist answers the calls you cannot, takes the enquiry and puts it in your inbox. Here is what it does, what it must never do, what it costs and when a human is the better choice.

The problem it solves
A tradie on a roof cannot answer the phone. A clinic receptionist on a call cannot answer the second line. The caller gets voicemail, and most do not leave a message; they ring the next business on the map. An AIIMS Group report in 2026, quoted by Dynamic Business, looked at 207,000 calls to 858 Australian small businesses and found 9.2 percent went unanswered, and that 69.3 percent of callers were new customers. Flooring at 17.9 percent and roofing at 17.6 percent had the highest unanswered rates. Those are their figures, not ours, but they match what owners tell us. The missed call was a quote, and the quote was a job.
What happens on a call
You forward your number, or just the calls you do not pick up, to the agent. It answers in a plain voice, says at the start that it is an AI, and asks what the caller needs. It is trained on your services, prices, hours and service area, so it can tell a caller that you do switchboard upgrades, that you cover the Shire, and what a first appointment costs. It takes the caller's name, number, suburb and the job, and sends a note to your inbox. If the caller asks something it does not know, it says so and takes the enquiry rather than guessing. Calls are recorded and callers are told. Our demo caller is Sam, with a burst hot water system in Kirrawee: urgent, new, and the kind of call that goes to the next listing.
What it must never do
The rules we set are the ones you would set for a new receptionist on their first day. Never pretend to be a person. Never quote a price you have not given it. Never book a job or promise a time you have not agreed. Never send anything you have not seen; on the plan with the inbox helper, it drafts replies and you check them. Say so when it does not know. These are not nice to haves. A receptionist that guesses a price or invents an appointment costs more than the missed call did. Each month we read the calls and fix anything it got wrong, so the agent gets more accurate the longer it runs.
What it costs
Missed Call Catcher is $149 a month for phone only, up to 150 calls, with a $290 setup that is waived with a new Elsio website. Front Desk is $299 a month and adds website chat, up to 400 calls and chats, and a monthly plain words report; setup is $490, waived with a new site. Office Manager is $549 a month and adds the inbox helper, automatic quote follow ups, review requests and one new automation each quarter, up to 800 calls and chats, with a $990 setup, again waived with a new site. All three are month to month with 30 days notice and no GST. Setup is one call of about 15 minutes, and most agents are taking calls within seven days.
When it is worth it for a tradie
Do the sum on one call. If a missed call is a quote, and a quote is sometimes a job, then a plan at $149 a month only has to rescue one small job a month to pay for itself. The businesses it suits are the ones where the owner is the one answering: a sole trader electrician, a plumber with one apprentice, a landscaper who is on the tools from seven. It also suits any trade whose work is urgent, because the caller with a burst pipe will not wait for a call back at five. It suits less well a business that gets two calls each week, or one where every caller needs a technical conversation before anything else can happen.
When it is worth it for a clinic
A clinic has a different shape. There is usually a receptionist, but there is also a second line, a lunch break, an evening and a weekend, and a physio or a dentist who does not want a patient in the chair interrupted. The agent covers the overflow and the after hours, takes the enquiry and the preferred time, and leaves the booking itself to the practice. The things to get right are the script around fees, what it will and will not say about treatment, and the fact that it is an AI, which it states at the start of every call. It does not book into your system; it takes the enquiry and passes it on, so nothing gets double booked while you are with a patient.
When a human is better
Some businesses should not use one. If your callers are mostly existing clients ringing about something in progress, they want you, not a note taker. If the first conversation is a long technical one, a human who can ask the right follow up question will win the job more often. If you are a two person office where someone is always at the desk, you may just need a better voicemail message and a text back. The agent is for the calls that are being missed right now and the calls that come when you are closed. It is not a replacement for the person who knows the business, and we would rather tell you that before you pay than after.
Questions
Questions
Will it sound like a robot?
It speaks in a plain, calm voice and tells the caller it is an AI at the start of every call and again if asked. Nobody is misled about what they are talking to.
What if it gets something wrong?
It is built not to guess: if it does not know, it says so and takes the enquiry. Each month we read the calls and fix anything it got wrong.
Do I need an Elsio website to use it?
No. The setup fee applies without one, $290 on Missed Call Catcher, $490 on Front Desk and $990 on Office Manager, and it is waived with a new Elsio website.
